Jazz Platform in Newbury
Jazz Platform - New Greenham Arts, New Greenham Business Park, Newbury, Berkshire
The aim is to encourage players to play live in their own bands or
to participate in jam numbers or to find other musicians to form bands
with their own brand of jazz.
There are often jazz courses run around the year which provide evening jazz clubs to
allow the students to play live.
The Jazz Platform provides a similar opportunity to experience playing
live, experiment and meet other jazz musicians.
For a jam set or workshop you'll need to bring your own music.
The jam session will be a mix of the advertised jam numbers and anyone who
wants to perform on the night.
Occasional workshops are either initial short sessions before the main jam
or one-day special events. The short session workshops occur before the main
Jazz Platform to allow those starting off to play along to a widely known jazz
standard, allowing players unfamiliar with the tune or improvising, to have a
go and build confidence to join in the jam sessions.
The group in the main set may invite guest players, but will typically
have the set to themselves.
Though aimed mainly at players the platform open to anyone to come along.
There is also a small admission charge to cover venue costs.
The Platform is hosted by New Greenham Arts near Newbury,
situated on the old Greenham Common US airbase.
The Platform is a spin-off from the Windsor Arts Centre Jazz Platforms
which have been increasingly popular with musicians in the
East Berkshire and West London area over the last three years.
The WINDSOR Jazz Platforms are held each 1st, 2nd & 4th Tuesday in every month.
The Windsor 1st Tuesday sessions are "Featured Band Nights" where a band or
player presents a full 2-set gig. This provides more experienced players/groups
with an opportunity to arrange and produce their own real gig. From time to time
established, professional bands are featured.

If you wish other musicians there to back you, you'll need to think about
what sort of arrangement..etc you want to play to, and provide at least
chord sheets.
Singers should bring along their mics if possible.
A PA will be provided. Pianists and drummers should bring their own pianos/kits.
The length of time available per performer/band will vary depending on
numbers of players,
but there will usually be at least a 10 minute slot per performer/band.
There will be friendly and supportive help from more experienced players
on hand.
While the venue is not licensed for refreshments, there is an adjoining
restaurant.
